June to September
Fire Island, New York
Jun to SepFire Island is the OG. The Pines and Cherry Grove are two of the most legendary gay beach communities in the world.
And the dress code has always been unapologetically bold. No cars, no pretense, just boardwalks, beautiful people, and decades of culture baked into the sand.
What to wear: This is not the place for board shorts. Swim briefs are standard, the tighter the better. Cheeky cuts, low-rise briefs, bold colors, all fair game.
Pack at least two. You'll want to change for the afternoon crowd at the Ice Palace or the Pavilion.Provincetown, Massachusetts
Jun to SepP-town is beloved for being exactly what it is: unabashedly queer, deeply New England, and packed wall to wall every summer weekend. Herring Cove Beach is the main gay stretch, with an unofficial men's section toward the far end.
What to wear: P-town rewards confidence. A well-fitted swim brief is the move. Solid colors and subtle gradients photograph well against the Cape Cod light.
The ocean breeze is real. A linen shirt or mesh top over your brief gets you from beach to Commercial Street without changing.South Beach, Miami
Oct to AprSouth Beach operates at a different frequency. The stretch between 12th and 14th Streets on Ocean Drive is the gay hub, and the standard here is high. The crowd is international, the bodies are sculpted, and nobody is underdressed on purpose.
What to wear: Low-rise is the dominant cut here. Briefs with a slim waistband, clean lines and saturated colors fit the Miami look. Ombre photographs beautifully in the South Beach sun.
Leave the athletic shorts on the hotel room floor.Laguna Beach, California
Jun to SepThe West Coast's answer to Provincetown. Laguna has been a gay destination since the 1920s and Main Beach retains a relaxed, artsy character that sets it apart from the circuit crowd. Less about being seen, more about actually being at the beach.
What to wear: California style leans toward a cleaner, more athletic aesthetic. Mid-rise briefs, solid colors, and quality fabric over flash. This is a good beach for your understated brief. Something that looks intentional without trying too hard.Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
Jun to SepThe most accessible gay beach on the East Coast for the DC and mid-Atlantic crowd. Poodle Beach is the designated stretch and it's been a fixture of the regional gay community for decades. Family-friendly by day, livelier by night.
What to wear: More relaxed than Miami or Fire Island. Mid-rise briefs or longer-cut trunks both work depending on how you want to present. It's a good starter beach if you're new to wearing a brief in public. The energy is warm and welcoming, not intimidating.Black's Beach, San Diego
May to OctBlack's Beach is one of the most famous clothing-optional beaches in the country, tucked beneath the cliffs of Torrey Pines north of La Jolla. It is a hike down. Steep trail, worth every step.
The reward is an isolated stretch with a strong LGBTQ and naturist following. Free, unpretentious, completely removed from the city.
What to wear: Optional, genuinely. If you're wearing anything, a minimal brief is the obvious choice, in the spirit of the place, and easy to remove.
The crowd is relaxed and body-positive across the board. Pack sunscreen everywhere, and shoes you can handle a steep descent in.Sitges, Spain
May to SepTwenty minutes down the coast from Barcelona, and gay long before it was fashionable. Platja de la Bassa Rodona is the main stretch, right in front of town.
Everything is walkable, the old town is beautiful, and Sitges Pride in June is one of the best in Europe.
What to wear: Spanish beach style is confident and uncomplicated. A low-rise brief in a solid color, and something linen for the walk back into town.Mykonos, Greece
Jun to SepSuper Paradise and Elia are the two gay beaches, both reached by boat or a determined drive. Elia is the calmer one. Super Paradise is not calm at all.
June through September. August is chaos, in the best and worst senses.
What to wear: The most dressed-up beach on this list. Bold color, sharp cut, and expect to be photographed.October to April
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Nov to AprThe most popular gay beach destination in the Americas, and deservedly. Playa Los Muertos is the main stretch, with Blue Chairs and Ritmos anchoring the south end of the Zona Romántica.
High season is November through April, dry and warm and full. Vallarta Pride lands in May.
What to wear: Briefs are completely standard here and the crowd is international. Good place to wear the bolder colorway you weren't sure about.Maspalomas, Gran Canaria
Oct to AprThe winter-sun answer for gay Europe, and Americans have mostly never heard of it. The gay beach sits out in the dunes past Playa del Inglés, toward Kiosko 7, and it's warm every month of the year.
What to wear: Whatever you want. It's a long walk across sand and the dunes are relaxed.
Full Maspalomas guideTorremolinos, Spain
May to OctCosta del Sol, twenty minutes from Málaga airport, a gay resort town since the sixties. The scene lives in La Nogalera, a dense block of bars a short walk from the sand.
What to wear: The beach turns into a terrace and then into a bar without you changing. Dress for all three.

Nov to AprMexico's only legally protected nude beach, about an hour from Huatulco. No resorts, no dress code, and a rip current that deserves respect.
What to wear: On the sand, nothing if you like. In the village, restaurants and bars still want you covered, so you'll wear a brief more than you expect.

Dec to MarRio is the one place where a swim brief is not a statement, it is simply what men wear. Posto 9 on Ipanema is the gay stretch, marked by a rainbow flag and impossible to miss.
Carnival takes over the city in February, but the beach runs hot from December through March.
What to wear: A sunga, which is the Brazilian swim brief. Board shorts will mark you as a tourist faster than your accent. Low-rise, bold color, cheekier than you would risk at home.
Nobody here is looking at you sideways for it. That is the whole appeal.Sydney, Australia
Dec to MarTamarama has been called Glamarama for decades and it earns the name. A small sheltered beach between Bondi and Bronte, and the crowd is fit, friendly and unmistakably ours.
The city peaks for Mardi Gras in late February. Lady Bay, out near Watsons Bay, is the clothing-optional option if you want one.
What to wear: Briefs are standard and the standard is high. Tamarama is a see-and-be-seen beach, so bring the one you feel best in.
Summer runs December to March. The hemisphere flips, so plan accordingly.Cape Town, South Africa
Nov to MarClifton Third is the gay beach. A sheltered cove of white sand sitting under Table Mountain with the Atlantic in front of it, and the view does half the work for you.
Sandy Bay, a walk further around the coast, has been the clothing-optional stretch for generations.
What to wear: Briefs on Clifton Third. The water is cold enough that you will not be in it long, so this is a beach for lying on and being noticed on.
Season runs November to March. What to pack no matter which beach you're going to
A brief that fits well matters more than anything else on this list. The right cut for your body, cheeky or fuller, matters more than the destination.
Pack two. One for the water, one to stay dry while you're posted up on the sand. A towel big enough to actually lie on, and reef-safe sunscreen.
For the beaches you'll be in and out of the water all day, take the Essential. Fully lined front and back, cheeky back, and it dries fast.
For the scene beaches, Fire Island, South Beach, Mykonos, take the Statement. Front lined, fuller back, ombre, made to be seen.
And if you're going to Fire Island or P-town, wear shoes you don't mind getting sandy. The boardwalk is long.
