# Swim Briefs vs. Jammers: Which Is Right for You?

**By Seaman Swim** · 2026-08-20

If you’ve narrowed it to a swim brief or a jammer, you’ve already skipped the board shorts — good instinct. But these two are for pretty different swims. Here’s how to choose.

The short version

Jammers cover more and are built for laps. Briefs cover less and are built to be seen.

- Jammer: waist to mid-thigh, compressive, made for training
- Swim brief: sits low across the hips, contoured, made for the beach
- Both are real swimwear. Neither one is underwear
- Seaman makes briefs, in two cuts and eight colors

## What’s a jammer?

A jammer is a knee-length (roughly mid-thigh to just above the knee) compression short, borrowed from competitive swimming. More coverage, a compressive fit, an athletic look.

## What’s a swim brief?

The classic brief cut — minimal coverage, maximum freedom, and the cleanest line of any men’s swimwear. (See our [Swim Brief vs. Speedo](/blogs/the-seaman-report/whats-the-difference-between-a-swim-brief-and-a-speedo) piece for the quality spectrum within briefs.)

## Coverage & look

- **Jammer:** covers the thighs, reads athletic and modest.
- **Brief:** shows leg, elongates the body, reads bold and confident.

## In the water

Both are fast-drying and low-drag. Jammers add thigh compression some guys like for long laps. Briefs are the lightest and least restrictive, the easiest to pack, and — let’s be honest — the best tan line.

## Occasion

- **Jammer:** lap sets, triathlons, or anytime you want more coverage.
- **Brief:** the pool, the beach, the resort, the trip — anywhere you want to look and feel good, not just swim.

## Which is right for you?

Want coverage and compression for serious laps? Jammer.

Want the confident, minimal look for the pool, beach, or vacation? Swim brief — and that’s our whole thing.

We make briefs in two cuts. **[The Essential](/products/essential-mens-swim-brief)** is the cheekier of the two and is fully lined. **[The Seaman Statement](/products/the-signature-mens-swim-brief)** is fuller at the back with an ombre finish. Both $79.95, both low across the hips, eight colorways between them. Support where it counts.

## Questions

**Should I buy jammers or swim briefs?**
Buy jammers if most of your pool time is laps and you want thigh compression. Buy a brief if you are at a pool, a beach or on vacation and you want the cleanest line. If you are honest that you swim twice a summer, the brief is the one you will actually wear.

**Are jammers supposed to be tight?**
Yes, deliberately. A jammer is a compression garment, so it should feel firm through the thigh without restricting your kick. A brief should feel snug at the waist and filled at the front without digging in.

**Are jammers or swim briefs faster?**
Close to even. A brief carries less fabric and less drag. A jammer adds thigh compression that some swimmers prefer over long sets.

**Can you wear jammers to the beach?**
You can. They read athletic rather than deliberate, which is why the guy getting looked at on a pool deck is usually in a brief.
