# How to Find Your Swim Brief Size (and the #1 Sizing Mistake Guys Make)

**By Seaman Swim** · 2026-08-20

A swim brief lives or dies on fit. Too big and it sags and drags in the water.

Too small and, well — you’ll know. Here’s how to nail it the first time, starting with the mistake almost everyone makes.

The short version

A brief lives or dies on fit, and most guys size up when they should not.

- Measure your waist. Do not use your pant size
- Sizing up to be safe is the single most common mistake
- Between two sizes, take the smaller one
- Seaman runs S to XL, and true to size

## The #1 mistake: sizing up “to be safe”

Guys instinctively size up the way they would with shorts. Don’t.

A swim brief is _meant_ to fit snug — the stretch and support are engineered into the fabric. Size up and you kill the support, it sags when wet, and you lose the clean line entirely.

When in doubt, go true-to-size, not bigger.

## Start with your waist, not your pant size

Vanity pant sizing lies. Measure your natural waist at the point where the brief will actually sit (lower than your trousers if it’s a low-rise). And match that to the size chart — not the “32” on your jeans.

## How a swim brief should actually fit

Snug everywhere, still when you move, flat at the waistband. [The full fit guide is here](/blogs/the-seaman-report/how-should-a-mens-swim-brief-fit) — where it should sit at every point, and the thirty-second test that settles it.

## Between two sizes? Here’s the call

Stretch fabric is forgiving _upward_, not downward. If you’re on the line: size down for a closer, racing/low-rise look. Stay true-to-size for everyday comfort.

If you are between sizes

- Take the smaller size. Swim fabric gives, it does not shrink
- A brief that sags in the water is too big, not too small
- Check the waistband first. If it digs or gaps, the size is wrong

## Don’t forget rise

Rise changes the fit as much as size does — low-rise sits below the hip and shows more, mid-rise sits higher for more coverage. Pick the rise first, then the size.
